They don't stay this small forever
There’s something magical about photographing motherhood in a place that already feels like a story waiting to be told. This end-of-summer motherhood session took place in the open fields of Medfield State Hospital, one of my favorite locations in Massachusetts for beautiful, cinematic portraits. The long grass, golden light, and wide-open space created the perfect backdrop for their emotionally-driven portraits.
From the moment we stepped onto the grounds, the evening light wrapped around them like a warm blanket. Niamh ran through the field with her toddler chasing behind her, tossed him into the air as he squealed with the kind of joy only a two-year-old can muster, and wrapped him into the softest sunset hugs. These are the moments I love to photograph—authentic motherhood that feels nostalgic the second you see it.
The entire session had a vintage, almost dreamlike feel, with warm tones, soft movement, and that slightly imperfect, film-inspired texture that makes an image feel like a memory instead of just a picture. Medfield State Hospital always lends itself to storytelling, but during late summer, when the grass glows and the sun hangs low, it becomes pure magic.
My goal is always to preserve connection in the most natural and artistic way possible. Sessions like this remind me why I love focusing on candid, relationship-centered moments. You don’t need props, perfect outfits, or stiff poses, just genuine love, a beautiful location, and a willingness to play.
If you're looking for a Massachusetts family photographer or want your own motherhood session at Medfield State Hospital, I’d love to help you create images that feel as heartfelt and timeless as this evening with Niamh and her little one.
